K.I.S.S is good but not that good isn’t it ?
Simple is good but too fast, too simple become Stupid…
Too simple could become simpler and really bullshit leading to forgetting what really imports in front of your requirements. It’s not always easy to be smart, efficient, fast and simple. That’s why sometimes (maybe most of) if you shorten things too much it literraly become stupid.
So let’s try the KIASAP !
Almost all managers are familair with the KISS, which stands for « Keep It Simple, Stupid »
KISS is a fantastic principle that should be summed up as « keep your business as simple as possible » that every manager should have on mind at every moment of the day as a MOTTO1.
But Business is not that simple ! That’s why i propose to use instead the KIASAP which is a more realistic, practical and less caricatural than the KISS.
What does it mean ?
- Keep It As Simple As Possible
- Realistic point of view of the KISS ; you are on earth and not in the cloud 🙂
- Simplify everything’s possible as far you can but don’t waste too much energy or time to do it.
- It has to stay efficient and adapted, Pareto’s 80/20 law is still a key
- Kill It As Soon As Possible
- If you can kill something useless or unproductive, please be focused and do it ASAP
- Everything becomes an emergency on those times > stay focused on what’s really important
- People don’t have time so please give them some by eliminating unproductive tasks or activities such as too many meetings with too many people
- Keep It As Short As Possible
- Don’t loose time if you don’t have to, stay efficient and prepare your meetings, for example
- Don’t be too short at the risk to not being able to communicate the right message accross or being ineffective
- To the point in a realistic maneer, you will have time to give details if needed after
- Keep It As Smart As People
- It has to be adapted ! Adapt your style and communicate in a way people will easily understand.
- Einstein get used to say « If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it enough » so be prepared
- Objectives and action plan must be clear and SMART
- Keep Involved And Stimulate Also People
- Let your teams take part in strategy, decisions and get involved
- Actively Listen to them; too many managers think they are listening but they absolutely don’t !
- Even if their ideas seems silly or pointless, their opinions are important and can make you think differently or come up with better ideas
- Even if you disagree, the change has already start in their mind
- Kangaroo Is A Super Adaptative Pet
- This one’s designed to make you smile 🙂 because that matter also everyday for you and your teammates ! But not only 😉
- Prepare yourself and your teams to be capable to adapt themselves to whatever they come up against. So coach, teach, train them !
- Kangaroo’s are sociable, fast, responsive, agile, intelligent, mentors (if you look the way the femalle educate her child) and commercialy fantastics. Don’t you want a team of kangaroos ?! 🙂
Albert Einstein
If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it enough
ASAP is the key !
Do it asap but stay focused, business first ! Prepare the plan, give priority, analyse what could be done and look on the quick wins. Take the time to do it and don’t report that analyse because there is too many emergency or wathever… DO IT ASAP ! Only true emergencies that could « kill » people or ruin the business matters.
Don’t forget to analyze the cost efficiency, it has to lead to some benefits other it’s effortless and will cost more than the expected return.
If you are not expert or you don’t have internaly, please… onboard or externalize the needs. Don’t think you can do it on you own with your team. They are not expert enough, they don’t have time and they are not efficient enough to let you avoid costs ! Anyway, using professionnals cost less !
Best practice
Take the time to invest (time) now to win a lot later even if you don’t think you have, please … take it !
